Advance

The Project

ADVANCE develops, tests and applies a sustainable mobility audit scheme, helping cities set up and improve the quality of their Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans and policies.

The Need
  • Insufficient or inappropriate sustainable mobility planning at a municipal level
  • Limited organisational structure to provide for long term urban mobility systems
  • Poorly developed mobility plans lead to waste of resources
  • Huge consumption levels of the transport sector are not in line with the mobility and accessibility they offer
  • Local partners and municipalities actively request methodological frameworks for improved planning and resource optimization
Approach / Tools
  • Developed a prototype of the Audit Scheme
  • Applied, tested and further improved the Audit Scheme
  • Trained external auditors
  • Assured the quality of the Audit Scheme and its implementability
  • Developed a dissemination framework and implement it
Results
  • Improved the quality of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) of European cities through the implementation of an auditing and certification scheme and the sharing of experiences among city practitioners
  • Trained future SUMP auditors
  • Establish a critical mass to trigger a snowball effect for the auditing and wide introduction of high quality integrated SUMPs
  • Contribute to the EU 2020 targets on energy efficiency and renewable energy sources by prioritizing local short term actions for sustainable urban transport
  • Disseminated the evidence of the contribution of good quality SUMPS to achieving the EU2020 objectives and the related need for quality audits
  • Increases the energy performance of urban transport in Europe through the wide introduction of good quality SUMPs in European cities
